Born in 1977 in Luanda, Angola where he lives and works.

He completed his studies in photojournalism at the London College of Communication (LCC) in 2007 and subsequently attended the documentary photography course at the University of Wales, Newport, until 2008. Chagas’s work has since developed a
more introspective focus beyond the standards of photojournalism. Chagas uses photography as a process in which he not only investigates daily life but also employs images in a pointed critique of consumerism. Images obtained from the everyday ‘things’ that surround us, in this sense, become existential beings. Through a specific methodology the viewer is invited to analyse and deconstruct these ‘documented times’, as well as their historical, social, geographical, ethnic and economic associations. Lately Chagas has received great acclaim. In 2013, at the 55th Venice Biennale awarded the Angola pavilion with the prestigious Golden Lion for Best National Participation, of which,
Chagas was the principal exhibitor with his photographic installation under the pavillion’s title, Luanda, Encyclopedic City. Also in 2013, Edson Chagas participated in a group exhibition entitled “Landscapes” at A Palazzo Gallery in Brescia, Italy. In 2014,
he associated with the ENSA-arte group for the Agenda Angola exhibition, at the Museo Nazionale Preistorico Etnografico Luigi Pigorini, Rome, Italy. His work is represented among others by A Palazzo Gallery, Brescia.

Il a étudié le photojournalisme au London College of Communication (LCC) en 2007 et a suivi des cours de photographie documentaire à l’Université de Newport, au Pays de Galles en 2008. Depuis, Chagas a davantage mis l’accent sur l’introspection au-delà des normes du photojournalisme. Chagas utilise la photographie comme un processus dans lequel non seulement il étudie la vie quotidienne, mais emploie également
des images dans une critique pointue du consumérisme. Des images obtenues à partir des « objets » de tous les jours deviennent des êtres existentiels. Grâce à une méthodologie spécifique, le spectateur est invité à analyser et déconstruire ces « moments documentés », ainsi que leurs associations historiques, sociales, géographiques, ethniques et économiques. En 2013, la 55ème Biennale de Venise a accordé le prestigieux Lion d’or de la meilleure participation nationale au pavillon de l’Angola, dont Chagas était l’artiste principal avec son installation photographique sous le titre « Luanda, Ville Encyclopédique ». En 2013, Edson Chagas a participé à une exposition collective intitulée « Paysages» à la galerie A Palazzo, à Brescia, Italie; en 2014, il s’est associé au collectif ENSA-arte pour l’exposition Agenda Angola du Museo Nazionale Preistorico Etnografico Luigi Pigorini, Rome, Italie. Il est representé entre autres par A Palazzo Gallery, Brescia.
