Born in 1961 in Kiffa. Lives and works in Paris.

Shortly after his birth, his family emigrated to Mali, where he attended some of his primary and secondary education. After a brief return in 1980 in Mauritania, he left for the Soviet Union in Moscow, where he studied film making at VGIK (Federal State Institute of Cinematography) from 1983 to 1989.
In 1994, at the 4th African Film Festival in Milan, he obtained the Prize for the Best Short Film for his film October. In 1999, at the 9th edition of the same festival, he won the Best Feature Film award for Life on Earth, filmed the previous year. He was president of the jury of Angers Premiers Plans Film Festival in January 2007, a member of the jury for feature films at Cannes 2007 and President of the FEMIS entrance examination the following year.
Along with Ousmane Sembène, Souleymane Cissé, Idrissa Ouedraogo and Djibril Diop Mambéty, Sissako is one of the few filmmakers of Black Africa to have reached international recognition. Among others he directed the following films: 2002 : Heremakono (Waiting for Happiness) (35mm, 90 minutes). First Prize (Étalon de Yenenga) at the 18th FESPACO in 2003; 2006 : Bamako (115 minutes)...

Peu de temps après sa naissance, sa famille émigre au Mali, où il effectue une partie de ses études primaires et secondaires. Après un bref retour en 1980 en Mauritanie, il part en Union Soviétique, à Moscou, où il étudie le cinéma au VGIK (Institut fédéral d’État du Cinéma) de 1983 à 1989. En 1994, lors du 4e Festival du cinéma
africain de Milan, il obtient le Prix du meilleur court métrage pour son film Octobre. En 1999, lors de la 9e édition de ce même festival, il reçoit le Prix du meilleur long métrage pour La Vie sur terre, tourné l’année précédente.
Il est président du jury du festival Premiers Plans d’Angers en janvier 2007, membre du jury des longs-métrages au Festival de Cannes 2007 et président du concours d’entrée à la FEMIS l’année suivante. Avec Ousmane Sembène, Souleymane Cissé, Idrissa Ouedraogo et Djibril Diop Mambety, Abderrahmane Sissako est l’un des rares cinéastes d’Afrique Noire à avoir accédé à une notoriété internationale.
